Getting Students into the Advisor's Office: Eric Devlin
This assignment was designed in response to a Director of Advising and Counseling’s expression of frustration about trying to get students to meet with advisers and counselors. The students discuss in class how they feel about having such a meeting. They list pros and cons, apprehensions, aversions, and even some advantages. Then the students are assigned to make an appointment with an adviser and counselor and to write a narrative essay about their experience scheduling the meeting, their thoughts and feelings in anticipation of the meeting, the experience of the meeting itself, and their reflections afterwards. Some remain critical; almost all report learning worthwhile things; some overcome aversions; all actually get there.
